Europe's "most stupid road sign" award is reserved this year for a road sign discovered in Italy. Virtually illegible, incomprehensible and non conformity with signposting standards; these were its winning attributes for the 16,000 motorists who responded to our international survey and picked it ahead of nine other examples of ludicrous signposting. Participating automobile clubs in 13 countries hosted the Road Signs internet questionnaire on their websites and invited motorists to respond. Unfathomable signs found in Austria and Britain came in second and third.
