Severe accidents on motorway work zones occur very frequently. Narrow lanes as well as dazzling by wet surfaces frequently cause accidents in road work zones. This is complemented by lack of experience and also inadequate speed at short distances between vehicles. Small driving mistakes combined with emergency braking may cause chains of accidents, most of which are pile-ups. Neither novice drivers nor very experienced drivers are immune to these dangers.
The transit safety and/or the risk of European motorway work zones were tested to inform motorists on country-specific risks, promote safe solutions for traffic management in work zones and to sustainably increase motorway work zone safety.
