Road Signs Test 2005

EUROTEST WANTS ROAD TRAFFIC SIGNS THAT ARE A HELP AND NOT A HINDRANCE

Good signposting is an important element of the road traffic management system. It should promote smooth traffic flows, help to counter traffic congestion and have a favourable effect on road traffic safety. In order to do this the messages transmitted by the posted signs to drivers must be easily understood. They play a key role in influencing driver behaviour, orientation and information.

At all times, short, clear and immediately understandable messages need to be provided to drivers in time for them to react correctly when driving. First, the sign must be seen early enough (position, size and contrast against the environment). Second, it must be recognised (shape, colour). Third, the message or indications provided need to be read and understood (symbols, letters and characters).

EU DRIVERS SAY ROAD SIGNS ARE OFTEN INCONSISTENT

Road traffic signs in Europe are far from serving their purpose always and everywhere. 15,000 EU drivers participated in a Eurotest Road Signs Survey conducted from October 2004 to January 2005.  Two thirds of the drivers who participated in the Internet survey conducted by European automobile clubs believe that road signage is often  insufficient for the given traffic situation and road routing. The biggest sources of annoyance are obscured signs, either  by other signs or foliage, followed by inconsistent road signs. European drivers demand that corrective action is taken urgently to remedy these two failings.

EUROPE'S "STUPIDEST" ROAD SIGN

Thats what Europe's motorists  said about this sign when surveyed.  Located at the entrance of a Parisian multi-storey car park the quantity of information offered to drivers is almost guaranteed to ensure long queues at the entrance.  The verdict: too many signs, too much information and too little time to take it in.

EU DRIVERS BELIEVE  STANDARDISED SIGNS IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY

Are drivers satisfied with the quality of traffic signs used in their countries for the purposes of managing traffic flow and road routing?

Are there too many signs placed too closely together?

Is there is a direct relationship between readily understandable signs and road safety?

To answer to all these questions, the European automobile clubs, members of EuroTest have conducted a study to find out whether road-users in Europe believe that the traffic signs provide them with appropriate information, thus heightening road safety.

TOO MANY SIGNS

There is an urgent need to get rid of the surfeit of traffic signs on European roads. This is the opinion of the majority of the motorists interviewed by EuroTest in a representative telephone survey in nine European countries. While many traffic signs are regarded as superfluous in Germany, drivers in Italy and Spain complain of confusing or wrongly placed signs.
